Zverev claims first US Open title with four-set win over Shelton
Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 in New York to secure his second Grand Slam title of 2026.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev has won his first US Open men’s singles title, defeating American Ben Shelton in four sets in New York.
Zverev prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2, adding the US Open crown to the French Open title he won earlier in 2026. The victory also marked a return to the summit at the tournament after he lost the 2020 final to Dominic Thiem.
Shelton was playing in his first Grand Slam final and had been seeking to become the first American man to win a major singles title since Andy Roddick in 2003. He also sought to become the first Black man to win the US Open men’s singles title since Arthur Ashe in 1968.
According to Al Jazeera, Zverev became emotional after the match while discussing the support of his coaching team and family. He said his mother had supported him after he was diagnosed with diabetes as a child.
The result gives Zverev two Grand Slam titles and leaves Shelton still searching for his first major championship.
