Pro Ref admits VAR error over Manchester City’s derby winner
Professional Game Referees said VAR should have recommended an on-field review of Erling Haaland’s goal in Manchester City’s 1–0 win over Manchester United.
Professional Game Referees (Pro Ref) has admitted an “error of judgement” in the decision-making around Manchester City’s winning goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Pro Ref said Erling Haaland was onside when he scored in the 60th minute. However, it said VAR did not sufficiently assess teammate Enzo Fernandez’s position or its likely impact on the play.
Fernandez did not play the ball, meaning whether his position constituted an offside offence was subjective, according to Pro Ref. The refereeing body said VAR should nevertheless have recommended an on-field review.
Pro Ref said it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error and that the incident would be reviewed. The goal was not overturned during the match.
City won 1–0 despite playing with 10 men for most of the game after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute.
