Pro Ref admits VAR error over Haaland’s Manchester derby winner
The refereeing body said VAR should have recommended an on-field review over Enzo Fernandez’s likely interference in Manchester City’s 1–0 win at Old Trafford.
Pro Ref has acknowledged an “error of judgement” in allowing Erling Haaland’s winning goal to stand during Manchester City’s 1–0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Haaland’s goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR determined that Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu had played him onside. Pro Ref said VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position during the same attack.
Fernandez did not touch the ball, but Pro Ref said his movement may have affected Manchester United’s defending and should have led VAR to recommend an on-field review. The Premier League Match Centre had previously explained that Fernandez was not penalised because he did not play the ball.
The interpretation was criticised by former players Micah Richards and Roy Keane. Richards said Fernandez was attempting to play the ball and that his movement affected the defence, while Keane said Manchester United had been punished despite holding what he described as a good defensive line.
Pro Ref said Manchester United had been contacted and that the incident would be reviewed. The source does not provide the outcome of any subsequent review.
