Prime Video’s God of War halts production, recasts Kratos after actor injury
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios pause filming on the live-action adaptation as lead actor undergoes surgery and recovery timeline proves incompatible with the production schedule.

Production on Prime Video’s live-action God of War series has been suspended following a significant on-set injury to lead actor Ryan Hurst. The studio behind the adaptation, Sony Pictures Television, in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, has confirmed that Hurst will not reprise the role of Kratos, necessitating a full recast of the titular character.
Hurst sustained a torn bicep while performing a stunt during filming, an injury that required surgical intervention. Although the production team initially hoped for the actor to return by mid-August, standard recovery periods for such injuries range from four to six months. Given the extreme physical demands of the role, sources indicate Hurst would have required additional time to achieve the necessary fitness levels, making a return before the scheduled production window impossible.
Consequently, producers have made the decision to reshoot four episodes that have already been completed with a new actor. The series is currently on pause, with a target date to resume shooting in Vancouver set for mid-October. This disruption affects one of the most anticipated video game adaptations, with an official image of Kratos and Atreus released in February remaining the only visual preview of the live-action series to date.
Hurst, who was announced as the lead earlier this year, reportedly gained 40 pounds of muscle in preparation for the part. The casting change does not appear to impact the broader production strategy, as plans remain in place to shoot two seasons back-to-back. The rest of the ensemble cast, including Callum Vinson as Atreus, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin, is expected to continue with the production.
The halt in filming underscores the logistical challenges inherent in high-profile fantasy adaptations. While the specific identity of the new Kratos has not been disclosed, the studios are moving forward with the reshoots to maintain the integrity of the narrative arc. The series, based on the long-running PlayStation franchise, faces a tight schedule to meet its delivery targets despite this unforeseen personnel change.
