Police search for thieves after two Renoir paintings stolen in France
Two suspects remain at large after a museum burglary in which two other paintings were reportedly abandoned during the escape.
French police are searching for two thieves who escaped with two Renoir paintings during a museum burglary, France 24 reports.
Two other paintings were reportedly abandoned as the pair fled and have since been recovered. The identities and whereabouts of the suspects remain unknown.
Retrieved reports identify the museum as the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in southern France. They name the missing works as Jeune fille au puits and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano, while Coco Lisant and Portrait of Madame Pichon were reportedly recovered.
The burglary has renewed concerns about security at French cultural institutions and the protection of the country’s cultural heritage.
The incident follows a string of robberies involving cultural institutions, including the daylight theft of Louvre crown jewellery last year, valued at about $100 million.
