Pirates activate Cruz from injured list as roster reshuffle begins

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated centre fielder Oneil Cruz from the injured list, ending a two-month absence that began with hand fractures sustained on June 6. According to a report by Jason Mackey, the move signals the club’s intent to reintegrate its primary outfielder as the regular season enters its closing phase.

In a corresponding roster transaction, utility man Ronny Simon has been optioned to Triple-A. Simon had appeared in nine games with 34 plate appearances, recording a .290 average with nine hits and two runs batted in. His departure opens a spot on the major league roster as Pittsburgh manages its final push for a Wild Card playoff position.

Cruz, who had played in 64 games prior to his injury, was hitting .264/.350/.472 before the setback. He had been on pace to significantly improve upon his previous season’s output of .200/.298/.374. However, his return to competitive play has been tempered by struggles during six rehab appearances in the minor leagues, where he recorded a .136 average with seven strikeouts in 22 plate appearances.

Despite the official activation, Cruz is not included in the starting lineup for Monday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. The Pirates will face left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez, a matchup that likely influenced the decision to keep Cruz on the bench initially. The team has relied on Jake Mangum and Billy Cook during his absence, with Mangum expected to retain a role in the outfield rotation.

Mangum has been a stabilising force, playing in 103 games and hitting .300 with four home runs and 28 RBI. Conversely, Cook has struggled, hitting .188 with a .204 on-base percentage across 68 appearances. The Pirates, currently 61-65 and in fourth place in the NL Central, enter the homestand having won three of their last four games, though they hold a 4-8 record in their last 12 contests.
