Phillies’ bullpen crisis deepens as Brad Keller suffers season-ending UCL tear
With the team surging into National League East contention, the loss of Keller exacerbates concerns over a relief corps ranking 21st in MLB in earned run average.

The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Thursday that right-handed reliever Brad Keller has suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. The diagnosis places Keller on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 13, and signals that he is likely out for the remainder of the 2026 season. The injury may also sideline him for most or all of the 2027 campaign, potentially rendering his current two-year, $22 million contract void if surgical intervention is required.
Keller’s absence strikes a significant blow to a Phillies bullpen that has struggled to maintain consistency throughout the 2026 season. While closer Jhoan Duran has delivered strong performances, the broader relief unit ranks 21st in Major League Baseball in earned run average, posting a 4.44 ERA. Despite this ranking, underlying metrics offer a slightly more encouraging picture, with the bullpen sitting eighth in fielding independent pitching.
The struggles have been particularly pronounced among left-handed relievers. Tanner Banks, José Alvarado, and Kyle Backhus have each posted an ERA above 5.80 this season. Collectively, the trio has allowed 58 earned runs in 77 1/3 innings, resulting in a combined ERA of 6.75. Keller, who had registered a 4.02 ERA in a setup role, was viewed as a stabilising force in a relief group that has been identified as a weak spot.
The injury occurs as the Phillies surge into National League East contention under interim manager Don Mattingly. Executive Dave Dombrowski is expected to intensify efforts to acquire bullpen help before the August 3 trade deadline. The front office’s priorities now include securing additional relief arms, a starting pitcher, and a right-handed-hitting outfielder to support a roster that is gaining momentum in the playoff race.
Market dynamics may complicate Dombrowski’s efforts. While relief options are theoretically available, the low bar for contention this season has resulted in fewer sellers and increased competition for players on the trading block. The loss of Keller adds urgency to the search, potentially requiring the Phillies to pursue multiple relievers to address the depth issues exposed by the injury.
