Clemson coach embraces underdog status amid roster overhaul and low expectations
Following a 7-6 record in 2025, head coach Dabo Swinney has publicly welcomed the lack of preseason optimism for the 2026 campaign, citing resilience and internal promotions as key strategies.

Clemson University’s football program has entered the 2026 season with significantly reduced preseason expectations, a shift head coach Dabo Swinney has openly welcomed. Following a 7-6 record in 2025, which marked the second-worst performance in his 17-year tenure, Swinney stated on 16 July that the team thrives when viewed as underdogs. This stance contrasts sharply with the previous year, when the Tigers were considered favourites to win the ACC and compete for the national championship.
The programme is navigating substantial roster turnover, most notably the departure of starting quarterback Cade Klubnik and eight other players to the NFL draft. In response, Swinney has rejected the pursuit of high-profile transfers, opting instead to promote from within. Christopher Vizzina is considered the frontrunner for the starting quarterback role after waiting three seasons, while freshman Tait Reynolds has won the backup job and is competing for the starting position.
Swinney explicitly stated the decision not to pursue a "shiny object" at quarterback, acknowledging the risk of criticism if the internal promotion fails. The coaching staff also features the controversial rehiring of Chad Morris as offensive coordinator. Morris, who previously served in the role from 2011 to 2014, has faced scrutiny due to his previous coaching record, including a stint at Arkansas where he won only four games in two seasons.
Despite expert predictions that Clemson will miss the conference championship and the College Football Playoff, Swinney remains confident in his current roster. The team utilised the transfer portal more than ever, welcoming a single-season school record of 11 transfers, though none were quarterbacks. Swinney noted that while critics wanted him to use the portal, the decision to stick with internal talent was deliberate.
Clemson’s first test of the 2026 season is scheduled for 5 September against LSU at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Swinney also highlighted the importance of player education regarding sports betting, citing the ineligibility of Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby as a cautionary tale. Tight end Olsen Patt-Henry noted that maintaining eligibility is a primary reason he avoids sports betting, reinforcing the programme's focus on compliance and long-term stability.
