Heat president Pat Riley signals further roster moves as Giannis Antetokounmpo is introduced
Giannis Antetokounmpo adopts jersey number 7, citing 'Heat Culture' as key driver for move, while Pat Riley hints at pursuit of LeBron James

The Miami Heat formally introduced Giannis Antetokounmpo on Thursday, marking the culmination of a significant trade that saw the two-time NBA MVP move from the Milwaukee Bucks. Antetokounmpo, now wearing jersey number 7, stated that the organisation’s distinctive 'Heat Culture' and the prospect of high-pressure competition were primary factors in his decision to join the franchise.
During his introductory press conference, Heat president Pat Riley alluded to additional roster enhancements, suggesting that the acquisition of Antetokounmpo was merely the first step in a broader strategy. Riley remarked that while the team had successfully 'landed the plane' with the new signing, there was 'another one we have to land,' a comment widely interpreted by observers as a reference to the ongoing free agency pursuit of LeBron James.
Antetokounmpo explained that his choice to change his jersey number from 34 to 7 was a tribute to his parents, who were born in 1963 and 1964, with the digits summing to seven. He noted that retaining number 34 would have been a disservice to the Milwaukee Bucks, the organisation that originally drafted him, and expressed a desire to leave that number behind out of respect. The change occurred so abruptly that the team’s merchandise store had to quickly swap out stock of the previous number.
The former Bucks star emphasised his alignment with the Heat’s philosophy, describing the move as a 'no-brainer.' He cited the team’s reputation for discipline, selflessness, and a collective focus on winning as reasons for his attraction to Miami. Antetokounmpo stated that he thrives under pressure and viewed the transition as necessary to reach the next level of his career, noting that he felt the Heat were 'very like-minded' with his own approach to the game.
Riley’s tenure in Miami has historically been defined by the acquisition of elite talent, including Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Bosh, and Jimmy Butler, with previous signings often leading to championships or multiple NBA Finals appearances. However, the Heat’s current roster is described as thin following the trade, and potential salary cap constraints may limit further additions until the 2026-27 season unless a major star such as James is secured.
An altercation between teammates Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro in Las Vegas following the trade has been reported, though the NBA has indicated no punishments will be imposed. Meanwhile, LeBron James attended two separate events in New York on Thursday without announcing his free agency decision, leaving the Heat’s pursuit unresolved.
