Paris region mortality doubles during record June heatwave
Excess deaths in the capital region surged by 1,565 above expected levels between June 22 and 28, with the elderly bearing the brunt of the crisis as scientists attribute the severity to man-made climate change.

France’s public health agency, Santé Publique France, reported on Friday that excess mortality in the Paris region more than doubled during a record-breaking heatwave in late June. The agency’s data, covering the period between June 22 and 28, recorded 3,000 fatalities, representing 1,565 more deaths than expected for that timeframe. The report, released on July 17, 2026, identifies the Ile-de-France area as one of the hardest-hit zones in a country that has endured three separate heatwaves since May.
Individuals aged over 65 accounted for 82.4 percent of these heatwave-related fatalities, underscoring the disproportionate impact on the elderly population. Santé Publique France noted that the number of heatwave-related deaths could still increase, as initial national excess death figures for all of France showed 2,000 more fatalities than expected. Health officials emphasised that heatwave mortality includes not only immediate effects such as dehydration and hyperthermia, but also delayed health impacts that manifest days after exposure.
The meteorological conditions driving these figures were unprecedented. France’s weather service described the 14-day heatwave as more intense than the 2003 episode, which claimed 15,000 lives in France, although the 2026 event was two days shorter. The heatwave broke all-time temperature records across France and Europe, creating conditions that scientists describe as historically severe.
Scientists from World Weather Attribution, a network of climate researchers, stated that the heatwave was the "most severe ever recorded" based on three-day forecast averages. In their assessment, they concluded that such an event would have been "virtually impossible" without the influence of man-made climate change, linking the increasing frequency of extreme weather directly to global warming trends.
The report highlights the strain on public health infrastructure as temperatures soar. With the Paris region recording such significant excess mortality, authorities are facing renewed scrutiny over preparedness for extreme weather events. As projections for national death tolls rise, the data serves as a stark indicator of the growing governance challenges posed by climate-driven temperature extremes.
