Carolina Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette is unlikely to feature in Saturday’s preseason match against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Dave Canales confirmed. The decision stems from conditioning requirements rather than a definitive medical ruling on the stinger injury Legette sustained earlier in training camp.
Canales indicated that while Legette has returned to practice, he has not yet reached the physical threshold required for game participation. The coach described Legette’s return to the field as positive, noting the player was moving with speed and executing plays effectively during Wednesday’s session.
Legette closed the practice with a catch described by Canales as a "walk off touchdown" from quarterback Bryce Young. Despite this positive sign, the coaching staff has determined that the wide receiver needs more time to build the necessary conditioning for competitive play.
The injury occurred on 4 August during a practice session when Legette landed awkwardly on his head and neck. While the exact severity of the stinger and the timeline for full recovery remain unspecified, the immediate impact is his absence from the roster for the upcoming opener.
Legette, selected in the final pick of the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, has recorded 84 catches for 860 yards and seven touchdowns across 31 career games. His production declined last season, dropping from 49 receptions in his rookie year to 35 catches, a period during which he lost his starting role to undrafted free agent Jalen Coker.
Acknowledging questions regarding his future with the team, Legette stated he spent the offseason refining his skills and improving his chemistry with Young. Training sessions took place at the Panthers facility as well as in Los Angeles and Arizona, with the receiver emphasising a focus on correcting errors identified in previous game tape.
"I ain’t never lost my confidence," Legette said, asserting his commitment to making plays. He expressed satisfaction with his position within the team as he continues to work on the technical details of his game following the recent injury setback.
