Pakistan opposition leader’s three sisters arrested, PTI says
Aleema, Uzma and Noreen Khan were reportedly detained in Lahore under 30-day orders issued under Punjab’s Maintenance of Public Order law.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party says three sisters of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan have been arrested in Lahore and sent to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
PTI identified the women as Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma Khan and Noreen Khan. The party said children accompanying the family were also taken into custody before being released.
According to France 24, copies of two detention orders seen by AFP showed the sisters were held for 30 days under Punjab’s Maintenance of Public Order law. Punjab police did not respond to a request for comment, and the circumstances of the arrests could not be independently confirmed from the material available.
The arrests come as PTI prepares for a protest announced for 27 September. Pakistan’s information minister, Attaullah Tarar, said the protest call was illegal and warned that authorities would not allow roads to be blocked or public life disrupted.
Khan has been imprisoned since 2023. He and his wife were sentenced to 17 years in prison on corruption charges they deny. Khan served as prime minister from 2018 until his removal in a 2022 no-confidence vote.
