Pakistan collapse to 133 as England seize control at Edgbaston
England’s seam attack dismissed Pakistan in 33.5 overs, with the tourists’ top five all making single-figure scores.
Pakistan were bowled out for 133 in the first innings of the third Test against England at Edgbaston, handing the hosts an early advantage after a chaotic opening session.
England won the toss and chose to bowl in autumnal conditions. Josh Tongue took four wickets, while Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer claimed three each as England’s four-pronged seam attack removed all 10 Pakistan batters.
Pakistan lost their first two wickets at 8-1 and 14-2. Their top five were all dismissed for single-figure scores, reportedly the first time that has occurred in a Test match’s first innings. Saud Shakeel made 43 to top-score for Pakistan.
The collapse followed controversial changes to Pakistan’s squad, including the call-up of Saim Ayub and Test debutant Razaullah Khan. The team had also struggled in the earlier Tests at Leeds and Lord’s.
BBC Sport reported that Pakistan were closing in on a series record for the lowest average score at the fall of the second wicket in England, but the record had not been confirmed. Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja and former England captain Michael Vaughan criticised the side’s technique, mindset and confidence.
