Padikkal anchors India’s Test reply with historic Independence Day century
Indian opener Devdutt Padikkal’s unbeaten 131 on Day 1 of the Galle Test marks a significant shift in batting order stability and adds a new layer to the nation’s sporting calendar.
Devdutt Padikkal delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, finishing unbeaten on 131 runs. His innings, played at the number three position, guided India to a total of 288 for two wickets after 73 overs, establishing a dominant platform for the remainder of the day.
The achievement carries specific historical weight, as Padikkal became the first Indian cricketer to score a Test century on Independence Day, 15 August. He is only the second Indian overall to score an international century on this date, joining former captain Virat Kohli, who scored an unbeaten 114 in an ODI against the West Indies in 2019.
Padikkal’s selection at number three came after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out due to injury. The left-handed batter capitalised on the opportunity, producing a fluent innings against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. His performance ended a period of instability for the position, as it has been nearly a year since Shubman Gill scored a Test century from number three against Bangladesh in September 2024.
Statistically, Padikkal is the second Indian left-handed batter in the 21st century to score a Test century from the number three slot, following Sourav Ganguly’s 136 against Zimbabwe in Delhi in 2002. He is also the sixth Indian left-hander overall to achieve this feat, trailing Vinod Kambli, who holds the record with four centuries from the position.
The innings highlights a tactical adjustment by the Indian team management, moving away from previous batting order configurations to address recent inconsistencies. Padikkal’s resilience against the spin conditions in Galle suggests a potential long-term solution for the middle order, reinforcing India’s position in the series.
