Sophomore Izzy Berg throws complete game one-hitter as young Hawks roster overcomes Rock Falls Rockets 8-0

The Oregon High School Hawks softball team secured the Class 2A Oregon Regional title on Saturday, 23 May 2026, defeating the Rock Falls Rockets 8-0 at Oregon Park West. The victory marks the Hawks’ first regional championship since 2022, ending a four-year drought for the programme. The win was driven by a dominant pitching performance from sophomore Izzy Berg and timely offensive contributions from a young starting lineup featuring four sophomores and two freshmen.

Berg delivered a complete game one-hitter, striking out 12 batters to secure her second consecutive postseason shutout. Her performance followed a 14-strikeout effort in the Hawks’ postseason opener against Somonauk. The pitching staff’s efficiency allowed the offense to build momentum, particularly in the sixth inning where Oregon scored five runs to pull away from the Rockets.

Sophomore Ashlee Mundell was instrumental in the offensive surge, recording three runs batted in. Mundell opened the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning, followed by an RBI single in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth. Her contributions helped offset the early pitching duel that characterised the first two innings of the contest.

Defensive support was provided by sophomore centre fielder Giselle Zavala, who made two critical catches to rob Rock Falls of potential extra-base hits. Zavala also contributed offensively with an RBI single and a run scored. Her defensive plays helped relieve pressure on Berg, allowing the pitcher to maintain composure throughout the game.

Rock Falls pitcher Silva kept the Rockets competitive for much of the match, recording 10 strikeouts with no walks. However, she allowed 11 hits, including several balls hit directly into fielding positions. Rockets coach Steve Giddings attributed the loss to the team’s inability to find gaps in the defence, noting that their hits were consistently absorbed by Oregon’s defensive alignment.

The Hawks now advance to face the Big Northern Conference champion North Boone. Oregon has played North Boone twice earlier in the season, losing both matchups by scores of 11-1 and 5-0. Despite the previous defeats, first-year head coach Abby Baker expressed confidence in her team’s pitching, defence, and plate discipline.

Baker highlighted the team’s resilience after a difficult period during the conference season. She noted that the young roster has developed the ability to compete against older, more experienced teams. The Rockets, meanwhile, are expected to return nearly their entire squad next season, with only two seniors departing.

The victory underscores the Hawks’ rapid development under Baker’s leadership. By combining youth with high-level execution, the team has positioned itself as a serious contender in the upcoming rounds. The focus now shifts to preparing for the challenge posed by North Boone, a team that has historically held the upper hand in head-to-head matchups this season.
