Oregon Ducks defence edges offence in second fall camp scrimmage

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning addressed the media following the team’s second closed scrimmage of fall camp, held on Saturday. The session marked a significant shift in team dynamics, with Lanning noting that the defence outperformed the offence, a reversal from the previous practice where the offensive unit had held the advantage.

Lanning praised the team’s physical management, stating that players came out relatively healthy and provided good examples of protecting teammates by avoiding unnecessary hits. He described the session as the final opportunity for extensive live tackling before the team transitions into specific game planning for the upcoming season.

A key area of improvement was the kicking game, which Lanning described as much better than in prior sessions. Kicker Rocco went four for four, while punters provided effective kick locations, contributing to what the coach termed a productive day of competition.

Despite the positive notes, decisions regarding the starting offensive line remain undecided. Lanning indicated that while some players have made their roles clearer through consistency, others are still finding their best form. He emphasised the need for further film review and continued reps to identify the best five players before finalising the lineup.

The Ducks are currently preparing for their season opener against Boise State, scheduled for 5 September at Autzen Stadium. Fall camp is set to conclude in approximately one week, after which the coaching staff will shift focus to detailed strategy for the Boise State matchup.

The 2026 season carries particular weight for the programme, as the Ducks pursue their first-ever national title. Lanning also acknowledged the ongoing discussion regarding NFL players returning for a fifth season, stating he was not shy with his opinions on the issue, though he preferred to focus on the prospects of the current roster.
