Opinion piece calls for Texas A&M pitching coach change after NCAA exit
An opinion article published by Yahoo Sports argues that head coach Michael Earley should replace pitching coach Jason Kelly following the team’s 7-1 defeat to USC.

Texas A&M baseball has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament following a 7-1 loss to USC in the College Station Regional Final on Monday night. The defeat concludes the Aggies’ season with a 41-16 record. In the aftermath, an opinion piece published by Yahoo Sports, originally appearing on Aggies Wire, argues that head coach Michael Earley should replace pitching coach Jason Kelly.
The article, authored by Cameron Ohnysty, contends that the current coaching approach is hindering the team’s competitiveness. It cites specific performance metrics from the starting staff and bullpen as evidence, noting that the top four pitchers—Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, Aiden Sims, and Gavin Lyons—allowed a combined 173 runs, 291 hits, and 78 walks during the season.
Specific concerns were raised regarding individual player development under Kelly’s tenure. Junior left-handed pitcher Shane Sdao finished the year with a 6.85 ERA after returning from injury, while Weston Moss ended the season with a 5.46 ERA and allowed a combined 33 home runs. The piece argues that these figures, outside of sophomore Aiden Sims’ performance, did not match the talent level of the roster.
While junior closer Clayton Freshcorn posted a 2.27 ERA and 51 strikeouts, the opinion piece notes he was left in the game too long after allowing a three-run home run in the tournament exit. The author suggests that one successful pitcher should not be sufficient to justify retaining Kelly, despite Freshcorn’s overall impressive statistics.
Both Earley and Kelly are in their second year with the program. Earley, who also serves as the hitting coach, is described in the article as having a likely secure future after leading the team to the postseason. However, the piece asserts that the manner of the team’s loss serves as an indictment of decision-making, particularly given the struggles of star hitters Gavin Grahovac, Caden Sorrell, and Chris Hacopian in the final two games.
The article acknowledges that injury issues plagued pitching depth early in the season, which cannot be directly blamed on Kelly. Nevertheless, it maintains that changes are necessary if the program intends to return to the NCAA Tournament and advance past the Regional Round. It remains uncertain whether Earley will implement these suggested changes.
