Oklahoma Signs Brent Venables To Two-Year Extension: What’s Next For The Sooners?
College Football

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his position with the Sooners through January 2032. The agreement, finalised on Thursday, is designed to provide institutional stability as the program navigates its transition to the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Venables assumed leadership of the team after former head coach Lincoln Riley departed for the University of Southern California. Since taking over, Venables has compiled a 32-20 overall record and guided the team to one College Football Playoff appearance. The extension follows a period of adjustment for the Sooners, who finished their first SEC campaign in 2024 with a 6-7 overall record and a 2-6 conference mark.

The most recent season marked a significant improvement, with the team finishing 10-3 overall and 6-2 in conference play. This result represented the first double-digit winning season under Venables' tenure. Athletic director Roger Denny, who began his role at the university in February, highlighted the coach’s capacity to build culture and connect with players as a primary factor in the decision.

Denny noted that Venables is well suited to lead Oklahoma football, praising his ability to bring out the best in young men. The athletic director stated that players trust Venables and believe in his vision, which he views as essential for the program's development.

The extension also aims to support long-term recruiting efforts. Venables has been instrumental in acquiring key talent, including transfer quarterback John Mateer, who finished his first season in Norman with 2,885 passing yards, 22 total touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The program also strengthened its defensive unit by adding safeties Prince Ijioma and Dakoda Fields, along with defensive lineman Patrick Payton, who previously recorded 10.5 sacks with the LSU Tigers.

With the College Football Playoff format continuing to evolve, the university views Venables’ continued presence as vital for establishing dominance in conference play and the postseason. The Sooners are scheduled to open their 2026 season at home against UTEP on Friday, 4 September.
