NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 faces backlash over AI-driven graphics makeover

Gamers and developers have criticised demonstrations of NVIDIA’s upcoming technology, saying its glossy visuals could blur games’ distinct artistic identities.

NVIDIA’s upcoming DLSS 5 graphics technology is facing mounting criticism after demonstrations prompted concerns that its real-time artificial intelligence could override games’ artistic direction. The company says the system will redraw lighting and materials to produce photorealistic effects when it launches in autumn 2026.

Earlier DLSS releases primarily reconstructed lower-resolution images and generated frames to improve performance. NVIDIA says DLSS 5 instead feeds colour and motion-vector data into a neural-rendering model anchored to a game’s 3D scene, altering elements such as skin, hair, fabric and lighting.

Demonstrations involving Resident Evil Requiem and Starfield drew criticism for characters’ smoothed, glossy appearances. Artists and developers also questioned whether games using the same model could begin to converge around a single visual interpretation of realism.

NVIDIA has maintained that developers will retain detailed artistic control over the technology. Bethesda said its implementation in Starfield would be optional for players and tuned by its art teams. Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, Tencent, NetEase and Warner Bros. Games are among the publishers supporting DLSS 5 at launch.

The debate intensified on 28 August after a leak from an early-access copy of NBA 2K27 reportedly enabled modders to inject DLSS 5 into unsupported games. Early testing in Control raised concerns about image quality and performance costs, although some reactions later became more favourable.

DLSS 5 has not yet received its official release, leaving its final image quality, performance and developer controls unverified. Leaked and modded versions may not represent the developer-tuned product NVIDIA plans to release.
