North Korea fires ballistic missile as regional tensions escalate ahead of joint drills
The test, detected from the Wonsan area, occurs just days before the commencement of annual US-South Korea military exercises, which Pyongyang has long condemned as rehearsals for invasion.
North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile off its east coast early on Wednesday, marking the second such weapons test in less than a week. The launch, detected around 6:00 am local time from the Wonsan area, was directed towards the East Sea and travelled more than 700 kilometres before landing in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
The timing of the test coincides with heightened military readiness in the region. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch, describing it as a serious problem affecting the safety of the Japanese people. Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi condemned the act as a threat to regional peace and security, lodging a strong protest with North Korea through diplomatic channels in Beijing.
The missile test comes just two days before the scheduled start of annual US-South Korea joint military drills on August 17. These exercises are designed to coordinate defence against North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and are a regular feature of the summer security calendar. Pyongyang has historically condemned these drills, often staging missile tests in response to what it views as invasion rehearsals.
Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at Kyungnam University, noted that Pyongyang rarely lets a joint exercise pass without a response. He suggested the launch serves as a message that the North is closely monitoring the upcoming drills and may stage further provocations if deemed necessary.
Tensions have been further complicated by allegations regarding North Korea’s involvement in the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday that Moscow had used a North Korean ballistic missile in an attack on a steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, an allegation that adds a new dimension to the geopolitical friction in the region.
This incident follows the detection of a short-range ballistic missile launch on 6 August, the first such activity since late June. North Korea did not initially confirm that earlier launch, relying instead on detection by neighbouring countries. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has previously characterised the joint drills as showing a will to ignite a war, prompting claims of necessary countermeasures.
