Nintendo’s next Fire Emblem has a bold new structure
Early impressions of the tentpole RPG highlight ambitious multi-protagonist structure but note significant redundancy in early gameplay.

Nintendo has released early impressions of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave for the Switch 2, revealing a complex narrative structure that diverges from the single-path design of its predecessor, Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The title, confirmed for release on 17 September 2026, allows players to switch between four distinct heroes to experience multiple storylines simultaneously, positioning the franchise as a major tentpole for the upcoming hardware platform.

The game opens with a fifth protagonist in a world devastated by a revived demon lord, who travels back in time to the Heroic Games to recruit four other heroes: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Each of these characters wields a unique weapon or artifact that grants superpowers on the battlefield, such as Cai’s ability to strike multiple enemies with flame. However, these items also function as a ticking time bomb for their wielders, adding a layer of risk to the strategic combat.

Despite the ambitious premise, early impressions from 26 hours of gameplay indicate significant repetition in quests, battles, and cutscenes across the different character paths. Players progressing through the first five chapters have noted that the basic structure of each storyline is largely identical, leading to a sense of redundancy that some describe as a slog, even as the narrative threads begin to intersect.

The gameplay loop incorporates a calendar-based preparation phase where players spend days training, building bonds between characters, and exploring the world map before engaging in combat. Battles are conducted through a traditional top-down, grid-based view as well as turn-based RPG encounters within dungeons. Early feedback suggests the strategic and RPG mechanics are excellent, with players finding themselves engrossed in optimizing team stats during the preparation phase.

Nintendo is launching Fortune’s Weave during a highly competitive period, including the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. While the full length of the game remains unknown, with the author noting they are only scratching the surface, the title is expected to stand out in a crowded market. The difficulty balance on standard settings remains unconfirmed, as initial playthroughs have not yet encountered significant challenge, though the core strategic elements have drawn positive attention.
