Nintendo says it has more Switch 2 games in store for 2026
President Shuntaro Furukawa cites software availability as critical to hardware sales as console costs rise

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the company is developing a variety of new titles for the Nintendo Switch 2, including exclusives targeted for the 2026 holiday season. The announcement, contained in the translated English Q&A from the company’s most recent financial results, comes as the console prepares for a scheduled price increase in September. Furukawa emphasised that strong software availability is critical for driving hardware sales and facilitating the transition from the previous generation to the Switch 2.

Furukawa cited the success of Pokémon Pokopia in contributing to hardware sales as evidence that desirable software is a key factor in supporting the transition to the Switch 2. He stated that the company is preparing new titles for the second half of the current year, in addition to those already announced, with details to be communicated at an appropriate time. The president noted that the upcoming titles include not just "major titles" but a variety of other games, aiming to increase the Switch 2 installed base, software sales, and the number of annual playing users over the medium to long term.

The current Switch 2 lineup for the second half of the year includes a new Yoshi game launching next week, a Star Fox remake in June, Splatoon Raiders and Rhythm Heaven Megamix in July, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave at some point in 2026. However, the schedule is described as lacking in "system-selling" tentpole releases, such as new entries in the Super Mario, Animal Crossing, or Legend of Zelda franchises. While the Switch 2 has benefited from these comparatively smaller games so far, those tentpole releases will be particularly critical once the Switch 2 is an even more expensive proposition.

The confirmation follows a scheduled price increase for the Switch 2 in September, which is expected to make the console more expensive. With the console about to get more expensive, Nintendo’s president confirms ‘we are working on a variety of new titles.’ That increased cost means that the company will rely heavily on new games to sell its current console, but as of right now the lineup for the second half of the year is sparse. Without getting into specifics, Furukawa has made it clear the company still has a number of titles in the works for 2026.

Going forward, the company will carefully convey the appeal of each title to encourage people to transition to the Nintendo Switch 2 at their own pace. While specific titles and release dates for the "new titles" mentioned for the second half of the year and the 2026 holiday season have not been disclosed, the company noted it is preparing new titles beyond those already announced to support the console's installed base. It remains unclear whether the "variety of new titles" includes major franchises or solely smaller-scale games, or how the September price hike will impact consumer adoption rates.
