Nielsen integrates wearable audio data into TV ratings methodology
Starting 31 August, Nielsen will incorporate data from wrist-worn devices to improve co-viewing accuracy and refine demographic estimates in the streaming era.

Nielsen has announced significant enhancements to its television ratings methodology, effective from 31 August, to address the challenges posed by fractured viewing habits in the streaming era. The primary change involves integrating data from Portable People Meter (PPM) Wearables into its co-viewing measurements. These wrist-worn devices, first deployed nationally in 2016, detect audio from television content to identify what is being watched without requiring panelists to manually log in.
The company stated that incorporating this technology will provide a more accurate understanding of how many people are watching a given program. By relying on audio detection rather than manual inputs, Nielsen aims to bolster the reliability of its data as traditional measurement methods face increasing pressure from on-demand services.
In addition to wearable integration, Nielsen is updating its use of Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) Device and Account Sharing (DASH) data. The firm will utilise new DASH estimates based on more recent survey data, building on its decision earlier this year to adopt ARF’s framework into its broader methodology.
Nielsen will also incorporate data from two additional surveys to better estimate the number of Spanish-speaking households within its panel pool. This move is designed to improve the representativeness of its audience data and ensure that diverse demographic groups are accurately reflected in ratings reports.
Furthermore, the company is refining the machine learning tools it uses to process information from data providers. These updates are intended to assess household demographics more accurately, ensuring that the data is more representative and does not artificially skew towards older residents.
These combined measures underscore Nielsen’s effort to maintain its position as the industry standard for ratings capture. As viewing habits become increasingly fragmented, the integration of wearable technology and advanced data processing represents a significant step towards capturing more reliable viewership information.
