Newcastle United’s Jaissle warns referees of ‘emotional’ touchline intensity
Matthias Jaissle outlines his vision for an aggressive, vertical style at St James’ Park ahead of the Premier League season opener against Liverpool.
Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has issued a warning to Premier League officials regarding his anticipated conduct on the sidelines, admitting he is “a bit scared” referees may penalise his intensity. Speaking at his unveiling at St James’ Park, the former Al-Ahli and RB Salzburg manager confirmed he will not alter his “emotional” coaching style, describing it as a fundamental aspect of his personality.
Jaissle acknowledged that while he intends to respect the technical area boundaries more than in the past, his high activity levels are non-negotiable. He referenced his time in Saudi Arabia, joking that his GPS tracking data would show significant movement, and expressed hope that match officials would “close their eyes here and there” during the initial stages of his tenure.
The 38-year-old manager aims to restore an “intense,” “vertical,” and “aggressive” playing style to the club, seeking to reverse the perceived loss of energy that marked the latter stages of predecessor Eddie Howe’s reign. Jaissle described the desired approach as “front-footed,” aiming to create a synergy between the team and the supporters that makes St James’ Park a difficult venue for opposition sides.
This tactical shift comes amidst a significant transition period for the club, which has seen the summer departures of key players including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes. Jaissle acknowledged the “vacuum” left by these exits, emphasising that restoring the club’s competitive edge will not happen overnight and requires a clear, long-term strategy from the board and management.
Despite having no prior experience managing in the English top flight, Jaissle faces immediate scrutiny with his first Premier League match scheduled against Liverpool on 23 August. Goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek and defender Malick Thiaw have already reported high training intensity under the new regime, while season ticket holders have noted a return to the exciting, high-tempo football associated with the 2022-23 season.
