Sporting director Ross Wilson says Newcastle prepared for Eddie Howe’s resignation while managing major player sales, a UEFA fine and a youth-focused recruitment strategy.
Newcastle United had prepared for Eddie Howe’s resignation for several months before the manager left in July, sporting director Ross Wilson has told Sky Sports. The club appointed Matthias Jaissle soon afterwards, with the new manager beginning his tenure unbeaten, according to the report.
Wilson said the transition did not feel chaotic internally, despite a summer in which Newcastle also lost several key players. He acknowledged that Bruno Guimaraes’ reported £75 million move to Arsenal was not part of the club’s plan.
Newcastle reportedly raised nearly £250 million through player sales and signed eight players aged 24 or under. Wilson said the club’s recruitment reflected a longer-term requirement to trade players as part of operating successfully in the Premier League.
The club’s transfer decisions were also shaped by its financial position. Newcastle were fined £5.2 million for breaching UEFA financial sustainability regulations, with a further £6 million suspended pending compliance. The club did not qualify for Europe this season, while chief financial officer Simon Capper forecast compliance with the Premier League’s financial rules.
Wilson said Nick Woltemade’s loan move to Juventus enabled Newcastle to complete the signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille. The account presented the deals as linked decisions within the club’s wider approach to managing the squad and its financial constraints.
