Netflix pairs Alfonso Cuarón with Dungeons & Dragons for new ‘Ravenloft’ series
The streaming giant is developing a live-action series based on the iconic campaign setting, while shelving its previous Forgotten Realms project.
Netflix is moving forward with a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series based on the Ravenloft setting, according to Deadline. The project is in development with acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón and writer John August serving as executive producers, alongside Hasbro Entertainment.
The series will reportedly centre on the origins of Strahd von Zarovich, the vampire Darklord who serves as one of the franchise’s most notorious villains. The narrative is expected to chart his transformation from a tragic antihero into a figure defined by power, love, obsession, and undead existence.
Ravenloft is considered one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most iconic campaign settings. The setting received a significant update earlier this year with the release of Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which may help build momentum for the upcoming television adaptation.
However, the announcement brings a mixed outcome for the franchise’s television ambitions. Netflix is simultaneously no longer developing its live-action Forgotten Realms series, a project previously attached to Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello.
The shift in strategy leaves the Ravenloft project as the primary focus for the company’s live-action Dungeons & Dragons efforts. While the series is not yet in production, the involvement of high-profile creative talent suggests a significant investment in the property.
