Netflix locks in October 20 release for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season two
The 10-episode anime series will follow a new cast of mercenaries in Night City, marking a standalone entry in the franchise.
Netflix has confirmed that the second season of its hit anime adaptation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, will stream on 20 October. The 10-episode series continues the narrative set in the dystopian city of Night City, though it will follow an entirely new cast of mercenaries rather than the original group.
The production remains a collaboration between video game developer CD Projekt Red and animation studio Studio Trigger. According to Netflix, the new season is designed to be a standalone entry, described as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge in a city that thrives on violence.”
Kai Ikarashi, who served as a storyboard artist and animation director on the first season, will take the helm as director for the new series. He will work alongside several veterans from the initial run, including Bartosz Sztybor, who will act as producer and showrunner.
Masahiko Otsuka returns as a writer for the season, while Ichigo Kanno has been appointed as the lead character designer. The creative team aims to bring a fresh perspective to the franchise while maintaining the core elements that defined the first season.
A first teaser trailer has been released, introducing the new cast of edgerunners and netrunners. While the clip is light on specific plot details, it highlights what Netflix describes as a “reimagined animation style.” The visual aesthetic appears grimier than Studio Trigger’s first take on the show, suggesting a shift in tone for the upcoming season.
The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was critically well-received and significantly boosted the popularity of the original Cyberpunk 2077 video game on Steam. CD Projekt Red is currently working on a sequel to the game, with the anime series continuing to drive interest in the broader franchise.
