NC State retains CJ Bailey despite ACC revenue constraints
Head coach Dave Doeren cites offensive continuity as key to ACC ambitions, even as budget deficits force roster churn.
NC State has retained quarterback CJ Bailey for the 2026 season, a move head coach Dave Doeren describes as the foundation for the Wolfpack's ACC ambitions. Bailey, who threw for 3,105 yards and 31 total touchdowns last season, chose to stay over entering the transfer portal despite interest from programs in his home state of Florida. The decision allows Bailey to enter his third year as starter, providing offensive stability. The retention comes amid financial constraints due to the ACC's new revenue distribution model, which has forced tough roster decisions and led to the departure of several other starters. NC State faces a favourable schedule in 2026, with only one projected top-25 opponent, Louisville.
Doeren highlighted the strategic advantage of having a third-year starter, noting only SMU shares this status in the ACC, which aids in leadership and offensive efficiency. "There's a lot to that," Doeren said at ACC media days. "You're going into the third time teaching that offense and letting (CJ) take charge of what's going on." Bailey stated his decision was driven by loyalty to coach Doeren, fans, and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, and questioned the value of learning a new offence elsewhere.
The retention comes at a significant financial cost. The Wolfpack’s football budget absorbed $13 million in direct revenue-sharing expenses, contributing to a broader budget deficit in the first year of the ACC’s unequal revenue distribution. This financial pressure necessitated the departure of four outgoing starters who signed with other Power Four programs on lucrative deals. To address roster gaps, NC State recruited 28 freshmen and 20 transfers.
Bailey’s return ensures the Wolfpack retains one of the conference’s premier quarterbacks, though it required accepting a lower financial package than he might have secured elsewhere. When asked if he accepted less money to re-sign, Bailey deferred to his agent, noting the loyalty he felt toward the coaching staff and fans. Industry sources indicate Bailey would have landed at a school in Florida had he entered the transfer portal in January.
NC State’s 2026 schedule is projected to be favourable, featuring only one top-25 opponent, Louisville. The season opens with a non-conference game against Vanderbilt on 19 September, followed by a cross-country trip to Stanford in late October. Potential season-defining contests against Duke, Florida State, and North Carolina are scheduled for the final month of the season.
