Jared Young was carted off Citi Field on a stretcher after a collision with Nolan McLean, with manager Andy Green confirming negative CT scan results but significant concussion symptoms.
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was hospitalised following a collision with Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Nolan McLean during a game at Citi Field on Thursday night. The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning when both players scrambled for a weak grounder hit by Justin Crawford.
According to manager Andy Green, a miscommunication between the fielders resulted in McLean’s knee striking Young’s head. Young lay on the field for an extended period while medical personnel attended to him before being removed on a stretcher with his head and neck stabilised.
Green told reporters that Young “avoided the scariest outcomes” and that his CT scan results were negative. The manager confirmed that Young has full use of his extremities, although he is experiencing what Green described as “real concussion symptoms.”
The incident left McLean “shaken,” with Green admitting he “probably” should not have left the pitcher in the game to finish the inning. The Mets have not yet confirmed a specific timeline for Young’s return to play.
The 31-year-old has been a productive addition to the Mets this season, hitting .266/.330/.429 with nine home runs and 39 RBI in 342 plate appearances. He has secured regular playing time following the departure of Pete Alonso and the injured list stint of Jorge Polanco.
The injury comes during a difficult season for the Mets, who are currently 36-53. The team suffered a 12-game losing streak in April that led to the firing of manager Carlos Mendoza, with Green serving as interim manager before returning to the front office next year.
