NC State Baseball Enters Transition Period Under Returning Coach Chris Hart
With the 2027 season approaching, the Wolfpack face significant roster attrition and strategic decisions regarding pitching development and in-game management.

NC State University’s baseball program is preparing for the 2027 season under new head coach Chris Hart, marking the first change in the role since 1997. Hart returns to the position after a 22-year tenure on the Wolfpack staff, shifting the focus from his appointment to the structural decisions that will define the next era of the programme.
According to reporting by Yahoo Sports, immediate attention is directed toward Hart’s approach to coaching staff composition, roster construction, in-game management, and non-conference scheduling. The transition period requires a re-evaluation of long-standing strategies, particularly regarding pitching development and tactical execution on the field.
Questions persist regarding the pitching staff’s historical performance. Clint Chrysler, who has served as pitching coach for eight years, oversaw a period characterised by high-end talent but also concerns over player development and a reliance on a limited number of arms. It remains unclear whether these tactical choices were driven by Chrysler or former head coach Elliott Avent, though the impact on player durability has been noted.
The current staff includes Bo Robinson, J.T. Jarrett, Tyler Stocum, and Joshua Fisher. Robinson, who spent nine seasons at Charlotte before joining NC State, currently serves as an assistant coach. There is speculation that Hart may seek to appoint a dedicated catcher development coach, a role left vacant following the departure of Brett Austin ahead of the 2024 season.
Roster construction presents a significant challenge for the 2027 campaign. Four players are out of eligibility, including Dalton Bargo, Brayden Fraasman, Wyatt Peifer, and Danny Heintz. Additionally, seven players are draft-eligible and expected to sign professional contracts, with incoming freshman Gunnar Alm also considered a high-probability draft pick.
Hart’s priority will be retaining key contributors such as Rett Johnson, Mikey Ryan, Andrew Wiggins, Christian Serrano, and Vincent DeCarlo. On the mound, arms including Anderson Nance, Luke Hemric, Sam Harris, Ryder Garino, Aiden Kitchings, and Mikey Ragusa are viewed as essential to the rotation and bullpen.
The incoming freshman class features notable prospects, including right-handed pitcher Otto Knust, who has reached velocities of 97 miles per hour. The group also includes infielders Landon Church and Cooper Gornet, alongside reclassified players Christian Serrano and Jacob Smith, the latter of whom underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2026.
