Winners and losers of LeBron James' long free agency: Prediction markets cash in as NBA schedule makers wait
Adam Silver cites national television windows and $76 billion media deal as pressure mounts on free agent

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has publicly urged LeBron James to finalise his free agency decision, warning that the delay is obstructing the completion of the 2026-27 schedule. Silver noted that the league’s television partners, including Disney, NBC, and Amazon, are pressing for clarity as the league operates under a $76 billion media rights agreement. The commissioner emphasised that James’ destination is critical for locking in national television windows, particularly opening week and Christmas Day fixtures.

The prolonged uncertainty has generated significant activity on prediction markets, with more than $210 million wagered on Kalshi and nearly $40 million on Polymarket. These platforms allow users to bet on outcomes ranging from James’ next team to the value of his contract and the method of his announcement. The longer the saga persists, the greater the volume of wagers, turning the free agency delay into a lucrative period for market operators.

Market sentiment has fluctuated sharply following a social media error by the Miami Heat, which accidentally published a video for a potential introductory press conference. Prior to the incident, the Cleveland Cavaliers held 38 per cent of bets on Kalshi, while the Heat sat at 36 per cent. Following the post, Miami surged to a 49 per cent favourite, causing Cleveland’s share to drop to 26 per cent. The Heat retracted the video, but the market splits have largely remained unchanged.

Conversely, the Golden State Warriors have seen their standing deteriorate significantly. At the start of July, the Warriors were cited as 46 per cent favourites, but their share of wagers has fallen to 17 per cent. Reports suggest that the pursuit of Anthony Davis as a lure for James has stalled, diminishing the likelihood of a reunion with Stephen Curry. The Warriors have not added any players besides draft picks since Draymond Green opted out, a move initially interpreted as creating salary cap space for James.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors face substantial roster risks if they fail to secure James, having structured their off-season moves around his arrival. The Cavaliers traded away Dean Wade to create space for James and James Harden, leaving them with limited alternatives if the deal falls through. Meanwhile, agent Rich Paul has become a primary source of information through his "Game Over" podcast, revealing that the Philadelphia 76ers are of interest and that the decision will not be based solely on financial considerations.

Rumours suggest James delayed an announcement at Fanatics Fest in New York City due to irritation with Silver’s public pressure to decide quickly. While other teams such as the Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat have made significant off-season acquisitions that provide a safety net, the Cavaliers and Warriors have fewer fallback options. The NBA remains one year into its lucrative television deal, increasing the urgency to finalise schedules for high-value national windows.
