Nate Scheelhaase gains attention as future NFL head-coaching candidate
The Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator interviewed for five head-coaching vacancies before returning to work under Sean McVay.
Nate Scheelhaase is attracting attention as a potential future NFL head coach after taking over as offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams.
The 35-year-old former University of Illinois quarterback replaced Mike LaFleur after interviewing for head-coaching vacancies with Baltimore, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Las Vegas during the previous hiring cycle.
Fox Sports highlighted Scheelhaase’s energetic, hands-on approach at Rams training, where he has been involved in drills, corrected players’ technique and worked closely with the offence.
Rams head coach Sean McVay praised Scheelhaase’s organisation, communication, leadership and football knowledge, while noting that he is continuing to develop within the team’s system.
Scheelhaase is part of a wider coaching network linked to McVay. Several former McVay assistants, including Zac Taylor, Matt LaFleur and Kevin O’Connell, have gone on to become NFL head coaches. That history has increased interest in Scheelhaase, although he has not been appointed to a head-coaching role.
Scheelhaase has described coaching as a way to contribute to something larger than himself, with responsibility and impact shaped by the role a coach holds within a team.
