NASA confirms Swift telescope rescue failure as satellite faces re-entry
The $30 million Katalyst-led mission to extend the life of the Swift observatory has been declared a failure, leaving the 2004-era telescope to disintegrate in Earth’s atmosphere later this year.

NASA has officially declared the failure of a $30 million mission designed to rescue its Swift space telescope from orbital decay. The announcement, made on Wednesday, confirms that the rescue spacecraft developed by American startup Katalyst could not be controlled, ending hopes of extending the operational life of the observatory. Consequently, the Swift telescope is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrate later this year.
The Swift telescope, launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts, has operated for nearly 22 years, significantly exceeding its original two-year design life. As the instrument lacks its own thrusters to maintain orbit, an external rescue was the only viable option to preserve its scientific capabilities. The mission was described as an unprecedented effort to use a robotic spacecraft to capture the telescope and boost it into a higher orbit.
The rescue spacecraft, known as the Link satellite, was launched on 3 July by a Pegasus rocket. However, the mission encountered severe technical difficulties shortly after launch. On 28 July, Katalyst reported that the spacecraft had entered an out-of-control spin for 72 hours, accompanied by a loss of communications. These issues prevented the team from stabilising the vehicle or executing the necessary docking manoeuvres.
In its final statement regarding the mission, Katalyst cited "ongoing attitude control issues" as the primary reason for cancelling the rescue operation. Despite the failure, NASA stated that the Link spacecraft would still attempt to reach the Swift telescope. The agency indicated that this final approach is intended to gather data and lessons for future satellite servicing missions, ensuring that the experience contributes to the development of similar capabilities.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman acknowledged the disappointment of the outcome but defended the strategic value of the attempt. "This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting," Isaacman said. He noted that the team had moved with extraordinary speed to give Swift a chance to carry out more science while advancing capabilities that America will need for satellite servicing in the future.
The failure marks the end of an era for the Swift observatory, which has been a critical tool for detecting the most powerful explosions in the universe. While the telescope is now on a trajectory for atmospheric re-entry, the data collected from the failed rescue attempt is expected to inform future efforts to extend the lifespans of other satellites in orbit.
