Muhammad targets title return as Bonfim challenges for welterweight supremacy
Belal Muhammad faces Gabriel Bonfim in a five-round main event on Saturday, with the former titleholder seeking to rebuild his standing after consecutive losses in 2025.

Belal Muhammad faces Gabriel Bonfim in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday, June 6. The five-round bout sees Muhammad, the former welterweight champion, attempting to return to title contention after consecutive losses in 2025 ended a long winning streak. Bonfim, ranked No. 11, aims to overtake Muhammad in the division’s hierarchy.
Muhammad (24-5, 1 NC) finds himself in unfamiliar territory after becoming welterweight champion in 2024 and extending one of the division's longest winning streaks. The recurring theme of UFC Fight Nights in the Paramount+ era is established veterans versus potential rising stars, a trend that now sees Muhammad (No. 5) battle Bonfim (No. 11). Muhammad remains confident, stating he believes the real victim of the matchup is his opponent, and intends to demonstrate he remains at the top of the division.
Bonfim (19-1) has the chance to become the next rising welterweight, pushing out the old guard. Muhammad is the last thread in a welterweight top five that has been taken over by relatively new blood. Bonfim, the younger brother of UFC fighter Ismael Bonfim and head coach Odair Bonfim, asserts that he will not only match Muhammad's pressure but push the pace despite competing in his first main event.
This week's Fight Night features several other notable bouts. Brendan Allen takes a significant risk staking his No. 4 middleweight position against unranked contender Edmen Shahbazyan. Fares Ziam has the makings of a major player in the lightweight division, Bryce Mitchell continues his rehabilitation, and Iwo Barankiewski looks for his fourth consecutive first-round knockout in less than a year.
The event will be streamed on Paramount+, with preliminary cards starting at 5 p.m. and the main card at 8 p.m. local time. Muhammad is training with UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, while Bonfim is known for his fast-twitch athleticism and kicking game, particularly calf kicks. Muhammad is known for relentless wrestling pressure and takedown pursuits, though he has limited finishing prowess.
