Moscow region hit by largest drone barrage in two years as civilian toll rises
Russian officials confirm over 620 drones targeted the capital overnight, with air defences intercepting nearly 200, while Ukrainian forces report significant suppression of enemy assets in a widening conflict.
Russian authorities have reported that more than 620 drones targeted the Moscow region overnight, marking one of the most significant aerial assaults on the capital in recent years. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that air defences intercepted 197 drones between Monday evening and 05:00 local time on Tuesday, with 180 shot down over the capital region and an additional 17 destroyed en route.
The barrage resulted in injuries to at least three individuals, including a 10-year-old girl, according to Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov. Vorobyov identified the Pavlovsky Posad district as the area suffering the most serious consequences, where a house burned down. Additional damage was sustained in the Bogorodsky district, where several residential properties and a guesthouse were affected.
A logistics complex belonging to the e-commerce giant Wildberries, located east of Moscow, also sustained damage. The company stated that debris from the attack hit the building's wall, causing what it described as minor damage. Ukrainian forces have previously targeted multiple Wildberries warehouses, alleging the retailer supplies components for Russian military drones.
The incident is characterised by Russian state media as the largest drone attack on the capital in the past two years. This escalation occurs as front-line fighting remains largely static, with both sides shifting focus to long-distance strikes. United Nations data indicates that July 2026 recorded the highest monthly civilian death tolls since the conflict began, with 437 civilians killed in Ukraine and 79 in Russia.
Ukrainian officials reported shooting down or suppressing 111 of 147 enemy drone attacks overnight. The unrest extended beyond the capital region, with Kharkiv’s regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov reporting five injuries, including a nine-year-old boy, following a Russian attack on Izyum. Fires and structural damage were also reported in Brovary, in the Kyiv region, according to local Mayor Ihor Sapozhko.
