Morocco PM rebukes football chief over unconfirmed 2030 World Cup final claim
Aziz Akhannouch says Morocco must consult co-hosts Spain and Portugal before any decision on the tournament’s final venue.
Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch has rebuked Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa for claiming the 2030 World Cup final would be held in Morocco.
Lekjaa reportedly told a political party event that Benslimane province would have the “honour” of hosting the final. The claim has not been confirmed by FIFA, which has yet to decide whether Spain, Portugal or Morocco will host the match.
Akhannouch criticised the statement at an election rally, saying the venue was a major matter that required consultation with Morocco’s co-hosts. He also warned against presenting the hosting decision as an electoral promise.
FIFA said the decision on the final venue would be made “in due course”. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation did not respond to a request for comment on Lekjaa’s remarks.
Morocco’s proposed 115,000-seat stadium for the tournament was reported to be about 30 per cent complete in May, with construction targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
