Morocco demands accountability as Italian probes open into Bologna arrest death
The Moroccan government has formally requested a full explanation from Italian authorities regarding the circumstances of a national’s death during a police restraint in Bologna, coinciding with a separate inquiry launched by Italian prosecutors.
Rabat has issued a formal demand to Rome for a comprehensive clarification of the death of 42-year-old Abderrahim Fakir, who died while being restrained by police in Bologna on Sunday. The Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Tuesday that it has asked Italian officials to fully clarify the details of the incident and determine responsibility. The ministry further called on Rome to take appropriate legal measures, emphasising that the circumstances must be established with rigour, impartiality, and transparency.
The diplomatic intervention follows the death of Fakir, who had arrived in Italy at the age of five. According to Italian media reports, police were called to the scene by neighbours concerned about Fakir’s erratic behaviour. Officers subsequently told ambulance personnel that the man was experiencing a psychiatric episode. Video footage recorded by a resident shows Fakir calling for help as two officers pressed him to the ground chest-first for several minutes, an action that led to his death.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the incident on X, describing the death as unacceptable and calling for the truth to be pursued to the very end. She stated that any potential responsibilities must be investigated with the utmost rigour, without prejudice or leniency. However, Meloni also explicitly condemned the violence that erupted in the city in the aftermath, noting that those who used the incident as a pretext to assault officers and endanger innocent bystanders were seeking confrontation rather than truth.
The unrest in Bologna resulted in significant injuries to law enforcement and demonstrators alike. Italian police reported that 54 officers were injured during the clashes on Monday. According to Italian news channel Sky TG24, 11 protesters were also injured during the demonstrations, which were organised by residents condemning the police actions. Bologna’s left-wing Mayor Matteo Lepore held a rally on Monday where Fakir’s niece, Yossra Fakir, addressed the crowd. She stated that the family was not seeking hatred or revenge, but rather the truth.
Prosecutors have opened a formal inquiry into the death, which has drawn comparisons to the 2020 killing of George Floyd in the United States. The Moroccan embassy in Italy reiterated its call for full light to be shed on the tragedy, aligning with the broader diplomatic push for accountability. As the investigation proceeds, the incident highlights the complex intersection of law enforcement protocols, mental health crises, and diplomatic relations between Morocco and Italy.
