MLB Trade Deadline: Contenders Assess Roster Moves Ahead of August 3 Cutoff
With the 2026 trade deadline approaching, teams from the Chicago Cubs to the Los Angeles Angels are navigating complex personnel decisions influenced by ownership transitions, injury reports, and interim leadership.
The 2026 Major League Baseball trade deadline is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on 3 August, prompting contending franchises to finalise their strategies for bolstering World Series aspirations. As the cutoff nears, speculation has intensified regarding high-profile assets, particularly Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal and Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman. However, recent performance surges from both teams have reduced the likelihood of these players being moved, as Detroit and Boston aim to maintain their competitive momentum heading into the postseason.
Injury crises are dictating acquisition priorities for several clubs, most notably the Chicago Cubs. The organisation has recorded 30 injured list stints this season, 26 of which involve pitchers, including key starters Cade Horton, Justin Steele, and Edward Cabrera. Consequently, the Cubs are prioritising pitching acquisitions, with sources indicating a clear demand for starting rotation depth from available options such as Robbie Ray, Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta, and Kevin Gausman.
Front office transitions are also reshaping trade dynamics. The Colorado Rockies, operating under new management led by president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes, are actively positioning themselves as sellers. The new regime has already initiated activity by trading reliever Seth Halvorsen to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The most significant potential move involves catcher Hunter Goodman, a two-time All-Star with three years of club control remaining. While the Rockies could retain him for their rebuild, his value may not increase, and teams such as the New York Yankees have expressed interest.
Leadership changes at the Los Angeles Angels have similarly altered their approach. Interim general manager John Mozeliak, formerly known for a conservative stance with the St Louis Cardinals, is reportedly open to trading controllable stars if suitable offers emerge. Mozeliak is considering moving starting pitchers Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano, along with shortstop Zach Neto. These players represent significant assets, with Detmers and Soriano under control through 2028 and Neto through 2029, though final decisions remain subject to owner Arte Moreno’s approval.

The New York Yankees are seeking a catcher and leverage relievers, prioritising these positions over outfield help due to concerns surrounding Aaron Judge’s status and their own bullpen instability. Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres remain in a transition period regarding ownership, with final documentation for the sale by Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones pending a vote after the deadline. General manager A.J. Preller may be compelled to trade bullpen assets, including Mason Miller, if the team fails to improve its standing relative to the wild-card race.
