This situation is attributed to an expanded playoff format and a general state of mediocrity, particularly in the American League.
The Houston Astros are three games under .500 but sit only two games out in both the wild card and the AL West standings. The team ended a five-game winning streak with a loss on Sunday. Similarly, the Minnesota Twins are one game under .500 with a -27 run differential, yet they remain just one game out of a playoff spot. The Seattle Mariners are two games under .500 and 1½ games out of both the wild card and the AL West, despite disappointing performances throughout the season.
In the AL East, the Baltimore Orioles have not been over .500 since a 9-8 start but are 2½ games out of a wild-card spot.
