Mitchell’s 21-game scoring streak rewrites WNBA record book

Indiana Fever forward Kelsey Mitchell has established a new benchmark for consistency in the Women’s National Basketball Association, setting the league record for consecutive games with at least 20 points. The milestone was reached during a 91–85 defeat to the Dallas Wings, where Mitchell tied her season high with 37 points. This performance extended her streak to 21 straight appearances, surpassing the previous record of 20 held by Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson.

The record-breaking threshold was crossed with a layup off an inbound play with 5.4 seconds remaining in the first half. Mitchell finished the game with 21 points before halftime, shooting 9-of-18 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. Her efficiency was underscored by a perfect 15-of-15 performance from the free-throw line, making her the fifth player in WNBA history to attempt 15 or more free throws and shoot 100% in a single game.

Beyond her scoring, Mitchell was central to the Fever’s offensive output, adding five assists and being involved in 48 of the team’s 85 total points. This marked her third career game with at least 35 points on 50% shooting and at least five assists, a mark that ties her for the most in WNBA history alongside Wilson, Diana Taurasi and Kelsey Plum. She also recorded her seventh 20-point half of the season, the second-most in the league behind Wilson.

The result ended the Fever’s five-game winning streak, a fact Mitchell acknowledged in her post-game comments. She attributed the achievement to team support and hard work, noting that while she does not take statistics too seriously, the circumstances of the game were significant. Mitchell emphasised the importance of keeping the primary objective of winning in focus, despite the individual accolade.

Mitchell’s return to the court came just two days after she exited early in a win against the Toronto Tempo. Coach Stephanie White had noted that Mitchell appeared to have overheated during that previous contest. The forward has spent her entire professional career with the Fever after being selected second overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft, with career averages of 18.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
