Three South Korean soldiers were injured when two landmines exploded during a patrol south of the Military Demarcation Line on 21 September. The 18-member unit was clearing a new route in the western sector of the Demilitarised Zone as part of an investigation into North Korean troop activity.

South Korea’s military and the United Nations Command concluded the mine was of North Korean origin. The UN Command, which administers the armistice along the border, said it had determined that an armistice violation occurred and was addressing it through established mechanisms.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff accused North Korea of laying mines south of the line, demanded an apology and called for an end to further border fortifications. North Korea rejected the accusation. Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader’s sister, called it a “self-staged farce” and accused Seoul of using the incident to justify provocations.

The investigation did not establish whether the mine had been deliberately placed south of the line or shifted there. One South Korean academic described deliberate placement as political intimidation; another said heavy rain or terrain movement could have carried mines from the North.

The competing accounts have sharpened debate in South Korea over how to respond. Some politicians have called for renewed border loudspeaker broadcasts and military exercises, while Pyongyang has denied responsibility and accused Seoul of provocation.
