Meta rolls out Pocket, an AI game-creation app, to US users
The experimental platform allows users to generate and share interactive “gizmos” via AI prompts, marking the latest move in Meta’s strategy to mainstream AI tools.
Meta has begun rolling out Pocket, an experimental application that allows users to create and share interactive games, to users across the United States. The app, which was previously tested in Brazil, enables users to generate small games using AI prompts. These creations, referred to as “gizmos,” are published to a scrollable feed for wider consumption.
The games respond to touch and phone tilt, include sound effects, and can utilise camera access or photos from the user’s camera roll. They can also include clips of songs. Created games can be shared on user profiles, where others can save, remix, or repost them.
Pocket is based on Meta’s acqui-hire of the team at the vibe-coded gaming platform Gizmo earlier this year. The launch is part of Meta’s broader strategy to mainstream AI creation tools, following the release of AI-generated images via the Meta AI app and AI videos via the experimental app Vibes.
The app joins several other standalone mobile applications released by Meta in recent months, including Instagram Instants, Forum, and Seller. Meta has also recently shipped an experiment involving AI bedtime stories and a Meta AI app for Mac.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has attributed the increased output of new apps to AI-enabled software development, which accelerates the testing and shipping of new ideas. Speaking on July’s earnings call, he noted that the company had shipped Instagram Instants, Forum, and Seller, and expected it to become easier to ship new apps.
Zuckerberg stated that the company is planning to build out more ideas and use its recommendation systems to scale them. The rollout of Pocket represents the latest example of Meta’s push to integrate AI creation tools into its ecosystem.
