Meta reportedly plans camera-free Luna smart glasses
The Information reports Meta could unveil the privacy-focused glasses at Connect this month, with shipments potentially starting in October.
Meta is reportedly developing a new pair of smart glasses without a camera, in a move aimed at customers concerned about the privacy issues surrounding its existing models.
The Information, as reported by Engadget, says the glasses could be called Luna and may be unveiled at Meta’s Connect developer conference on 23–24 September. Shipments could reportedly begin as soon as October, although neither the launch nor the timing has been confirmed.
Luna will reportedly include six built-in microphones, speakers directed towards the wearer’s ears and a side button for activating Meta AI. The glasses are also expected to come in Clubmaster and Burbank styles, with slimmer temples intended to make them resemble ordinary eyewear.
Meta’s current smart glasses include a camera and an LED designed to indicate when recording is taking place. Engadget reported that previous software updates addressed ways users could tamper with or cover the indicator while filming.
Those glasses have faced reported criticism over the potential for covert recording, harassment and other privacy concerns. The camera-free design could give Meta a way to retain voice-based artificial intelligence features while reducing some of the objections associated with its current products.
Meta has not been cited as confirming Luna’s name, design, specifications, launch or potential shipping date.
