Ryan Day confronts Ohio State’s fourth-quarter collapse against Texas
The Ohio State coach accepted responsibility for aggressive decisions after the Buckeyes surrendered a 20-point lead and lost 24–23 at Texas.
Ryan Day has acknowledged that some decisions could have been handled differently after Ohio State surrendered a 20-point fourth-quarter lead in a 24–23 loss at Texas.
The Buckeyes led 23–3 entering the final quarter, but Texas scored on its final three drives to complete the comeback. Speaking at Tuesday’s news conference, Day described the defeat as “extremely frustrating” and said Ohio State needed to address the issues exposed by the loss.
Day said he “absolutely” owned some aggressive decisions, including a failed fourth-down conversion when Ohio State could have attempted a field goal. He also said the team did not have enough answers in the fourth quarter, while expressing confidence it would respond positively.
The coach said he may reconsider a late defensive decision in a similar situation. Ohio State held Texas near the goal line rather than allowing a touchdown that would have left more time for a potential game-winning drive.
Fox Sports reported that quarterback Julian Sayin completed five of 16 passes in the second half. Ohio State, now 1–1, will host Kent State before opening Big Ten play against Illinois on 26 September.
