German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on 4 October for an unannounced visit to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and signal continued support for Ukraine.

“I travelled to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” Merz said in a statement after arriving. He said Ukraine could continue to count on German help, without specifying new assistance.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said the talks would cover bilateral, European and international matters. Germany’s Economy Minister Katherina Reiche accompanied Merz, according to German government sources.

The visit comes as France 24 reports Russian missile and drone attacks have targeted Kyiv and key infrastructure, including the energy sector. Ukraine has repeatedly sought additional air defence munitions, the report said.

Russia warned foreign nationals and diplomats to leave Kyiv ahead of possible further airstrikes, according to France 24. The report gives no outcome from the planned talks or details of a specific new German aid package.
