Rory McIlroy reveals what Jack Nicklaus told him to change about his game just two weeks ago
The Northern Irishman sits eight shots adrift but hopes to implement advice from the tournament’s founder

Rory McIlroy has turned to Jack Nicklaus for tactical guidance as he attempts to bridge an eight-shot deficit heading into the final round of The Memorial Tournament. The Northern Irishman, who sits eight shots behind the leaders at Muirfield Village, disclosed that the tournament’s founder recently advised him to prioritise cut shots to achieve softer landings on the course’s difficult greens.

McIlroy, 37, has long expressed a desire to secure a victory at the event to shake Nicklaus’ hand, a moment he described as iconic after watching Tiger Woods achieve it in his youth. Although McIlroy has never won at Muirfield Village, he maintains a close relationship with Nicklaus, having first met in a Palm Beach Gardens car park in February 2009 and frequently practising at the nearby Bears Club.

The advice came during a lunch meeting a couple of weeks ago, where Nicklaus reportedly urged McIlroy to adjust his approach to the greens. McIlroy noted that the course’s thick rough often neutralises his driving advantage, a primary strength he prides himself on. He admitted that the fairways pinch in at spots where he typically finishes with a driver, forcing him to rely on precision over power.

Despite the significant deficit, the leaderboard remains fluid. J.T. Poston and Ryan Gerard had completed only five holes of their third round at the time of reporting, leaving the final standings uncertain. McIlroy acknowledged that while he is unlikely to win this week, the tournament requires a peak performance that he has yet to fully replicate at Jack’s Place.

McIlroy also reflected on Nicklaus’ support during The Masters earlier this year, where the Golden Bear helped devise a game plan that led to McIlroy’s victory despite a double bogey in the final round. He expressed gratitude for Nicklaus’ kind words at the Champions Dinner and his continued willingness to share insights, hoping to eventually realise his dream of winning the tournament.
