McIlroy re-enters BMW Championship race with five-under third round
The World No 2 recovers from a difficult week in Memphis to sit at 12 under par, five shots behind leader Wyndham Clark.
Rory McIlroy has re-entered the running at the BMW Championship in St Louis, posting a five-under par third round to finish the day at 12 under par. The World No 2, who is seeking to bounce back from an eight-over finish at last week’s St Jude Championship, now sits alongside Patrick Cantlay in the middle group of the leaderboard.
McIlroy’s week began with a six-under par opening round that placed him in a share of the lead, followed by a 69 on Friday. On Saturday, the back-to-back Masters champion maintained steady form on the front nine, turning at one under after birdies on the second and 11th holes.
The Northern Irishman accelerated his pace on the back nine, recording four birdies from the 13th hole, interrupted only by a bogey at the 14th. On the closing 18th hole, McIlroy found both bunkers with his opening two shots but executed a recovery effort that nearly resulted in a chip-in before he saved par.
Wyndham Clark holds the tournament lead at 17 under par, having pulled clear with a strong back nine. Gary Woodland and Chris Gotterup trail McIlroy and Cantlay by a single shot, while JJ Spaun has dropped to two over par.
World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, the winner of last week’s St Jude Championship, sits in a group on five under par. Scheffler, who shot a 72 in the first round, recorded a 68 on Saturday to improve his position on the leaderboard.
