McCarthy joins Giants as quarterback order remains unsettled
Jameis Winston will start against Arizona on Sunday, while the Giants have yet to name his backup or say how long he will remain the starter.
J.J. McCarthy has begun practising with the New York Giants after joining from Minnesota in a trade, but the team has not confirmed his place in the quarterback rotation.
Coach John Harbaugh has named Jameis Winston the starter against Arizona on Sunday. The Giants have not said whether McCarthy or practice squad quarterback Jake Haener will serve as backup, or how long Winston will keep the starting role.
The Associated Press report says the Giants gave up a fifth-round pick to acquire McCarthy after season-ending knee injuries to quarterback Jaxson Dart and linebacker Brian Burns.
Harbaugh called McCarthy “a very talented player” and said he believed the move would make the team stronger.
Winston’s first start in place of Dart ended in a 12–7 win over Tennessee. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 118 yards; the Giants gained 238 total yards and scored no touchdowns.
