'We got it wrong': MCC breaks silence on Lord's pitch after England Test win
Lord’s groundstaff cite weather volatility as factor in inconsistent bounce during opening match against New Zealand

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has formally acknowledged that the pitch at Lord’s exhibited inconsistent bounce during the opening Test between England and New Zealand, admitting the surface did not meet the standards expected at the iconic venue. Following England’s 115-run victory, the club released a statement addressing the scrutiny surrounding the pitch’s behaviour, noting that the variable bounce was below their desired threshold.

"We recognise that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have wanted," the MCC stated. "We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface falls short of those expectations." The club emphasized that despite significant annual investment in the Main Square, including research, technology, and specialist expertise, external factors complicated preparation efforts.

The MCC cited unusually hot and dry weather conditions in May, followed by wetter conditions in the lead-up to the match, as significant challenges for the groundstaff. These climatic shifts created complications in preparing a balanced contest between bat and ball. The club affirmed its commitment to applying improvements outlined in its recently published 'MCC Cricket Strategy 2026-29', stating it remains focused on acting quickly to address pitch development issues.

On the field, the pitch proved highly favourable to seam bowling, with only 166 overs required across four innings to produce a result. England secured the win on the fourth morning after dismissing New Zealand for 138 while defending a target of 254. New Zealand resumed Day 4 at 55/5 but lost their remaining wickets inside 40.3 overs, allowing England to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.

Key performances defined the contest, with Ollie Robinson named Player of the Match after taking 5/39 in the first innings. Gus Atkinson also delivered career-best figures of 5/30 in the second innings, contributing to England’s comprehensive victory. The series now moves to The Oval, where the second Test is scheduled to begin on June 17.
