Mateta’s Fifa challenge leaves Crystal Palace contract dispute in limbo
The France international has taken his case to the world governing body, arguing the final 10 months of his deal are invalid. Fifa has ruled the matter falls outside its jurisdiction, leaving the contract binding for now.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has escalated his contract dispute with Crystal Palace by taking his case to Fifa, arguing that the final 10 months of his deal are invalid. The France international claims that the optional 12-month extension activated by the club in 2024 should be void, a move that would potentially render his contract, which expires in June 2027, premature.
The dispute was previously heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules. While there has been no official confirmation of the outcome of that hearing, it is understood that Mateta’s contract remained binding. He has since sought a ruling from the world football governing body, hoping to overturn the decision through a higher authority.
Fifa ruled earlier this week that overruling the contract was not within its jurisdiction. This procedural determination means that, for the time being, the striker’s deal with the Selhurst Park club stands as originally written. BBC Sport has approached both Mateta’s representatives and Fifa for further comment on the ruling.
The contractual standoff follows a turbulent period for the 29-year-old, who signed a four-and-a-half-year contract in January 2022 that included the 12-month extension option. Palace exercised that option in 2024, extending his stay until the end of the 2026-27 season. Mateta’s attempt to leave for AC Milan in January this year collapsed due to a knee injury, a setback that forced the club to sign Jørgen Strand Larsen as a potential replacement.
Mateta remains a pivotal figure in Crystal Palace’s recent history, having scored 67 goals for the club. He played a major role in their historic FA Cup and Conference League triumphs under former manager Oliver Glasner. His ambition to play for elite European clubs has been a consistent theme, but the current legal challenge threatens to cast a shadow over his time at the club.
If Mateta successfully argues that his contract is void, it could set the wheels in motion towards him becoming a free agent before the expiry of his Palace deal. However, with Fifa’s jurisdictional ruling, the striker must now determine his next steps within the existing framework of his agreement.
